Death Stranding, the latest game from video game legend Hideo Kojima, is one of those head-scratchers. It defies standard conceptions of genre, plot, and gameplay. At times, it can be so boring that it breaks your mind. And yet, there is something gorgeous and challenging about it. To be sure, this game is not for all players. But if you like unique and thought-provoking experiences, you will enjoy this one.
The game takes place in a futuristic, post-apocalyptic world that has been hit by a phenomenon known as Death Stranding, which has, quite literally, wiped out large swaths of the world. It did so by opening a gate between the worlds of the living and the dead. There are some humans left, but only some. You play as Sam, a journeyman who delivers packages and supplies between settlements.
A unique journey that sometimes strays into mind-numbing boredom
You are also seeking to help reconnect the country that has been ravaged by death stranding while rescuing your in-game sister. With you at all times is BB, a baby in an orange bottle. BB serves to warn you whenever BTs (ghostly bad guys) float around the area. It also alerts you to other imminent danger and serves as your companion.
During the game, BB becomes more than just an early warning system and takes a role in your heart similar to other famous, non-talking characters, like Portal's Companion Cube. The game has all the hallmarks' of a Hideo Kojima masterpiece: Fascinating plot, abstract dialogue, and an in-depth story that seems ripe for exploration. Unfortunately, it's the execution of the game where things start to go a little wonky.
Much of the game's graphical energy concentrates on building a world that is sharp and crisp. In this regard, it excels. Characters are detailed, and the scenery is realistic, absorbing, and gorgeous. Furthermore, like other Kojima games, the audio excels.
Thankfully, this game doesn't forget that in a land of vast and empty space, sound matters. The soundtrack provides you with a haunting companion. Furthermore, BB's eerie sounds will haunt your dreams.
This game is an epic, one in which you can easily invest fifty hours or more. Unfortunately, much of that time is boring! At their cruelest, reviewers have referred to this game as a walking simulator, and there's an awful lot of points where that's a pretty accurate description. You deliver packages across massive distances. Much of the dialogue makes absolutely no sense.
The menus are awkward and annoying. There are vast periods of time where your only input is just to press the controller forward or climb a ladder. Characters discuss plot points without giving you a new player, the slightest idea of what they are talking about. Much of this game is about balance and planning. You have to balance the packages you create and keep in mind that balance as you move. Furthermore, you have to build your load-outs to maintain Sam's package load at all times. This is annoying, but also part of the game's unique challenge.
If you like to ring out every last drop of gameplay from a game, there's good news. Like that orange that you can never thoroughly squeeze the juice out of, you can play Death Stranding for hours. The world is expansive and massive and chocked full of secrets and new areas. Because there is so much to explore, you will always feel like there's more to do and experience. You can play this one for dozens of hours and never have the same experience twice.
Death Stranding is a unique effort from one of the all-time best directors, but if you get bored easily, you will want to throw this game out a window.
