The world of sims is a little odd to those who come from the outside. While most games seem to be all about experiencing elaborate fantasies, sims are usually about experiencing the mundane. Nowhere is that better illustrated than with Car Mechanic Simulator, a game that's literally about fixing up old cars for customers. Whether this holds your attention depends on how you feel about car repair and sims in general.
The concept of Car Mechanic Simulator is pretty simple - it takes players inside an auto shop and allows them to fix up cars. What's brilliant about this, though, is how the game doesn't try to get too ambitious. Most sims would try to make this more of a business simulator, requiring players to balance running the shop with providing excellent customer service. That's not this game.
Car Mechanic Simulator is all about the repair process - no more, no less.
While there is undoubtedly an economic aspect to the game, it's better to think of Car Mechanic Simulator as an elaborate set of puzzles. You get a car with a problem, and you have to figure out how to fix it. The simplicity of the game makes it much more than it otherwise might have been.
As you might expect, this is the kind of game that lives and dies by its graphical presentation. The good news is that Car Mechanic Simulator looks good enough to play. Every car seems suitably unique, and the parts look close enough to real-life that you won't mistake one for another. It's not the prettiest game out there, but you won't find yourself complaining about the graphics.
While Car Mechanic Simulator looks excellent, the audio is terrible enough that you'll keep your speakers on mute.
The sound effects in the game are ok, but the music in the game is both aggressively bad and aggressively loud. It might be a sound mixing problem, but it's so annoying that you'll want to get rid of it ASAP. It's a shame, though, because the general ambiance of the game would be improved so much with a better soundtrack.
The gameplay of Car Mechanic Simulator is nothing short of fantastic. Every car is its puzzles, and you'll need to figure out what's wrong with it to progress. Once you know what's wrong, you've got to yank out the old part, replace it with something new, and figure out if you diagnosed it correctly.
The loop here is that every car you fix earns you some money and puts you part of the way towards improving your skills. You'll find yourself looking to fix one more car every time you play, turning sessions into marathons if you aren't careful.
The brilliant thing here, though, is that you don't need to know anything about cars to play. It certainly helps, but the game teaches you everything you need to know. It's a nice touch that makes the game far more accessible than one might imagine.
Car Mechanic Simulator certainly isn't for everyone. If you love cars and you love car repairs, though, you'll find an awful lot to like here. Though the sound is truly annoying and there are the usual glitches and bugs that can make the game technically frustrating, it is still an amazingly friendly sim. Give this one a shot if you like spending your days off under a car's hood.
Car Mechanic Simulator is an accessible, entertaining auto repair sim.
