An Entry Into the "Minecraft" Genre Which Fails To Fully Deliver on the Game's Promise.

Building vehicles in a sandbox

Like Minecraft, TerraTech is an open world, sandbox-style game. Much of the focus of this game is on construction, but this time, you're building vehicles. There are three different styles of gameplay in this game.

In Campaign mode, you open with a limited set of tools, which slowly expand to you as you find other pieces of the technology needed to construct the vehicles. The campaign serves as a perfect way of introducing new players to the game.

The other two modes - Creative and Gauntlet - allow all of the game's various constructions tools available to you right away.

In Creative, you build until your heart's content.

In Gauntlet, you create a vehicle, but then race it against the computer.

Furthermore, the game isn't completely focused on construction: There are bad guys to kill and items to purchase, forcing you to consider combat and economic management as you play.

Chunky textures just like... Minecraft!

TerraTech is not a game built with stellar graphics. Indeed, by and large, it looks like a Minecraft rip-off. Sprites and figures are blocky and lack textures. The audio is relatively rudimentary, featuring basic background music and sound effects. It's tough to argue that the game's audio or visual is anything short of disappointing.

Creative solid gameplay with some annoyances

Players are supposed to be as creative as humanly possible in this game. Thankfully, the game gives you the tools needed to encourage that creativity. When you play, you're given a fantastic array of components (planes, weapons, gears, etc.) that you can assemble; however, you'd like. You find these various components in chests which are scattered throughout the game world or on the corpses of enemies you defeat via combat.

the more you play, the more comfortable you will get with the game's design.

There are also trading posts, which force you to manage limited resources and navigate the in-game economy. Your vehicles can be simple or complex, but the more you play, the more comfortable you will get with the game's design. You can pick up missions from the game's trading posts. Completing these missions will allow you to earn more XP, which in turn, will give you access to more construction tools.

Common complaints have been centered around the game's lack of a tutorial and initial tools. The Campaign mode provided some instruction, but not nearly enough, and for a game geared towards younger kids, this can be a major problem.

Common complaints have been centered around the game's lack of a tutorial and initial tools.

Furthermore, for beginners, the game can be exceedingly annoying: You can get your vehicle stuck and find yourself unable to continue. The in-game camera can go more than a little wonky, and the controls can also be occasionally frustrating.

The more you play, the more you stay

The game first became a playable demo in 2014 and premiered for Xbox, Switch, PS4, and Steam in 2018. Its price is usually around $20.00, fluctuating with sales.

Thankfully, this game has significant replayability potential. The more you play, the more comfortable you will be with the game's various construction mechanisms, giving you the chance to construct more tanks and planes with ease, allowing you to create more fantastic vehicles. If this style of game appeals to you, it will be a long, long time before it gets old.

TL/DR

The game's concept is solid, but it fails to execute on many critical gameplay features and can leave you feeling more than a little frustrated.
