Introduction

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is the latest in a long line of Star Wars... everything. It's a single-player game developed for PC and console. Fallen Order is driven primarily by story and combat, with a sprinkling of bugs for flavor.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Resist the Empire and complete a winding scavenger hunt.

Concept

You play as Cal Kestis. He is a Jedi padawan who narrowly escaped Order 66. (The Jedi massacre at the end of Revenge of the Sith.) Cal is now roaming across the galaxy, resisting the Empire alongside his faithful droid BD-1.

While the game fits neatly into Star Wars canon, the story itself can be bland at times. (Not bad, per se... but not groundbreaking, either.)

If you're looking for a fresh take on the series, you may come away disappointed.

Your primary objective is to follow a trail of clues left behind by BD-1's former master. Some of the villains and side characters enhance the story with interesting dialogue and side-quests.

Graphics and Audio

The graphics are exceptional, with breathtaking scenery and (mostly) highly-detailed character models. Lighting and color palettes are deeply reminiscent of the original movies. Some of the extras look a bit cartoony, but for the most part, it's a nicely-rendered game.

The UI is minimalist, allowing you to sink into the world without distractions. The only things on the screen are the essentials, like health bars or tips.

The audio is great at capturing that Star Wars aesthetic feel. An orchestral score nicely supplements lightsaber sounds, blaster shots, and environmental interactions.

Gameplay

The combat is one of this game's best redeeming qualities.

To succeed in Fallen Order, you can't rely on just brute force. You have to be tactical about engagements. Dodging and deflecting are just as important as offense. If you're a casual player, unfamiliar with this type of Dark Souls-y combat, you will struggle.

The combat makes Star Wars: Fallen Order feels more like Star Wars: Dark Souls.

You will frequently be outnumbered in fights. Trying to pull single enemies for 1v1 is nearly impossible. The rest of the group catches up quickly. You'll need to leverage the Force, your powers, and other tricks to stay on top.

Fortunately, you're not alone. BD-1, the droid, is an essential mechanic in the game. He's the Swiss army knife of droids. He can heal you, open doors, assist with puzzles, and generally serve as party support.

The thing that stops gameplay from reaching a full five stars is something no game is immune to, bugs. It's hard to enjoy the game when you're suddenly glitching through a wall. Fortunately, none of the bugs render it unplayable.

Conclusion

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is a good addition to the canon. Its passable story and occasional bugs are overshadowed by exciting combat and beautiful, sprawling worlds. The game is atmospheric and makes you feel like you're in the Star Wars universe.

Replay Value

Replaying this game won't yield any new content. Instead, it's comparable to rewatching a movie. You already know how it turns out, but you liked it enough to want to come back and experience it again.

TL/DR

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order isn't perfect, but its breathtaking worlds and engaging combat make it worth the buy.
