Rimworld - An absorbing mashup of storytelling, construction simulation, and why is my base on fire?

So many genres, so many systems, such little time!

Build a colony after crashing on a frontier space planet

Rimworld is another entry into the popular colony construction and management genre. In the game, you manage characters who seek to build a colony after their ship crashes on a frontier space planet. You do so by building a base and managing the random, procedural generated events that occur throughout the game.

Construction + People = DRAMA

There is a rough back story: Three characters crash on a planet and must build a colony. More characters will join the colony, and they can make contributions or be taken, prisoner. Each character comes with certain traits used to assist the colony in its initial construction, but those traits can create problems later down the line.

The end goal of Rimworld is to build a spaceship that allows at least one character to escape. To do this, players must construct a colony, manage resources, research technology, and eventually build a ship that allows you to escape the planet and win the game.

Two particular aspects make this game shine. First: It's complexity and level of detail. The game gets extremely granular and allows you to manage so many systems and subsystems. If you like simulators, this is a dream. Second: Its emphasis on characters. Everything that occurs in the game happens through your colonists. Your character's traits - and the way they interact with the rest of the base and other colonists - creates a fascinating new element to this game. This adds personality and drama that other simulators simply cannot match.

Graphics and Audio Meh.

The game's phenomenal emphasis on complexity, construction, and drama doesn't carry over to its graphics. There's nothing wrong with the display, but there's nothing overly interesting or fascinating about the sprites, movements, or designs of the game's graphics or audio. The nicest thing is this is what you would expect out of a space simulator game—nothing more, nothing less. That's not a compliment.

Hope you like procedural generation and Artificial Intelligence!

Rimworld relies on random events more than most games. Some reviewers describe it as a game that focuses on simulation and storytelling above all else.

One of the benefits of the game is its easy and intuitive systems. Construction is a breeze, and the organizational systems are clean and sharp, making for easy construction.

To be clear: This game is hard. Really hard. "The randomized events which plague your characters and colony will decimate you over and over again." Including weather, animals, fire, you name it, and there is probably a disaster that will murder you. Does it get frustrating? You bet. Is luck required to win here? Absolutely. Does that keep you coming back for more? Heck yes.

Conclusion

The developer of Rimworld is Ludeon Studios. The game is available on computers only and can be downloaded from Steam. Like many games, it spent an extended period in Early Access - almost five years - before it was released.

The game's complexity and high levels degree of randomization will unquestionably keep you coming back for more. There is so much to handle in this game that there's no way to experience it all in just one play-through. You will want to play it over and over and over again to experience more.

TL/DR

A fascinating twist on the simulation genre that uses procedural generated events and a brutal difficulty curve.
