It's always a noble idea to find ways to make education a bit more fun. Math isn't always the most exciting subject for kids, and there's been a long history of developers trying to make games that allow young players to make some progress in mathematics while still having fun.

Prodigy Math Game

Prodigy is one of the most dominant games in the education genre right now, used not only by individual students but often as a tool in school-wide educational curriculums. It does still beg the question, though, of whether the game is worth playing.

Taking a quick look at how the game works will give you an idea if you're in its target audience.

Explore a magical world and do math!

Prodigy is a math game that disguises itself as a roleplaying game. Students are tasked with exploring a magical world and fighting several magical enemies. Doing so doesn't require mastering spells or combos, though - it requires the student to make use of many math concepts to advance.

The selling point here is that the game is supposed to match itself to the educational level of the player, providing a robust review process for students who might be struggling in math.

an utterly infuriating tendency for the game to advertise pricy membership plans

The issue with the concept, unfortunately, is how it is presented. While there is quite a bit of work done to make the game seem fun, there's an utterly infuriating tendency for the game to advertise pricy membership plans while the student is trying to play.

Something feels off about an educational game that's working so hard to make a few extra bucks off of impressionable kids.

Bright and colorful

It's tough to pin down whether or not this game feels like it's got anything to offer graphically. It's certainly bright and colorful enough for the youngest students who are meant to play it, but it's a little too childish for the older kids who are theoretically also part of the target audience.

If you look at the game in a vacuum, it seems very similar to virtually every other browser-based RPG out there - nothing too good, of course, but also nothing too wrong.

The audio is likewise reasonably inoffensive. There are enough little noises to keep kids focused on the game, but nothing they are going to remember. There have been plenty of children's' games made that have very memorable soundtracks, but it feels like Prodigy only wants to do the bare minimum.

All about doing math

This is just a game about doing math. It might try to hide that by making combat look like a turn-based RPG battle, but it seriously is just a math game. That would be fine, but the actual process of doing math is a lot harder than it needs to be.

The interface is oddly unresponsive, and the controls don't work as well as they should.

There are plenty of decorations and clothing items to be found in the game as well, but quite a bit is locked behind a membership. This is par for the course for many free games, but it's a little sad to see in something that's used so often in school settings. The game might work well, but the membership sales are hard to swallow.

A reasonably useful learning tool

The Prodigy Math Game is a reasonably useful learning tool that doesn't quite rise to the level of some other educational games. It's not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but it'd be nice to see a more dedicated educational game that doesn't rely so heavily on trying to get kids to buy a membership.

The Prodigy Math Game is an RPG math learning tool for elementary school students.
