Plants' aims are relatively noble. The developers wanted to create something with no violence, no real conflict, and that can help players relax. While it's certainly not the first game to do so, Plants goes about its goals by using many of the same trappings that are present in more typical games.

Plants

You might even go so far as to think of this game as a particular type of puzzler - one that's more reliant on energy management than anything else.

In Plants, you are in control of a single plant, and your goal is to grow it as tall as possible. You'll have to manage your energy to keep your plant growing while you grab items, but those are the only challenges. The game feels very meditative at times, in the same way as other similar energy-management games.

A simple game

Plants makes no pretense of being an AAA title. There's no attempt to make anything photorealistic or to really wow the player with visuals. The graphical style here is simple by choice, and that's fine.

looks good and feels right for the atmosphere

Everything looks good and feels right for the atmosphere, with a few beautiful artistic effects thrown in from time to time. There's nothing here that's going to wow you graphically, but there's also nothing that is going to disappoint you.

The audio's much the same as the graphics, though the simplicity works a little better on this front. The music is pleasant and soothing - it fits the tone of the game entirely, to the degree that the game loses something if you turn the music off. It's not the kind of swelling orchestral score that you' get from a bigger game, but it still works.

Disappointing or perfect?

It's tough to tell if the gameplay in Plants is disappointing or perfect. Everything revolves around your mouse - the plant grows in the direction that your mouse is moving, and you'll guide the plant to pick up various items along the way.

Most players have seen this control scheme in many free online games, and it works here just about as well as it works there. You'll get frustrated from time to time when the plant doesn't follow you quite as well as you'd like, but this game is more about atmosphere than precision anyway.

A game for relaxation

The game is not a game that you're going to play when you want to have fun. However, it is a game you might like to play if you need to relax. It's hard to recommend this as a standard game, but it is an excellent tool for reducing your stress. If your goal in gaming is to find a way to wind down after a tough day or before you go to sleep, give this one a try. If you're looking for something more, though, you won't find it here.

TL/DR

Plants is a relaxing game that's more about serenity than fun.
