House Flipper

Turn teardowns into beautiful homes

You start the game as a lowly fixer-upper, a nameless character who is living in a catastrophically messy hovel-like shack (which, ironically, is in desperate need of fixing on its own). The purpose of this game is to flip houses.

You purchase homes that are abysmal train wrecks and then use in-game currency to repair them. This involves cleaning, renovations, upgrades, and more. The game is 50% simulation and 50% resource management.

People who enjoy interior decoration at a minute level of detail (think The Sims, but less relationship and more chair repair) will enjoy playing this one.

Just like the houses you fix up, this game needs some repairs

The graphics are an odd (and sometimes disconcerting) mishmash of realism and cartoon-style. Furniture is richly detailed and textured, but there's a glaring disconnect between that and your flat, plastic-looking hand.

Some of the game's harshest criticism can be reserved for its graphics and formatting. For example, at least one player noted that text on the game's all-important task list could get cut off, and that means you won't be able to read items and complete the game's level. Furthermore, the less-than-ideal color scheme of the game can make it difficult to spot the last bit of dirt you need to clean and complete a level.

These aren't minor inconveniences: They can be game-breaking bugs, and they should be repaired for a better in-game experience.

Do you like manual labor?

The actual gameplay includes manual labor: You take control of the mouse and use it to clean, dust, sweep and shine your house. Installing furniture involves actually clicking on its various components (like screws and hammers). To the game's credit, the process is true to real life. As such, actual knowledge of how home installation works can be greatly beneficial, and you can even learn a thing or two about home repairs or installation if you play this game for long enough.

There's also a ton of creativity involved, as you have a wide degree of control over how a home is remodeled. You are given all of the tools, including furniture, tiling, and carpeting, so you ultimately control the end product...provided you have the money to turn the house into what you want it to be.

You can build a house to look like whatever you want

You can build a house to look like whatever you want, but potential buyers give you clues about their tastes. Deciphering their desires limits your creativity but enhances the strategic aspect of the game. There are built-in task managers in this game, making it easy to track your various objectives and your progress. Indeed, one of the best aspects of this game is the sense of progression. It's largely open-ended, so you choose what assignments you want to complete.

However, it becomes clear very quickly that you need a strong sense of resource management to horde your limited cash flow. You start by taking small assignments (such as appliance replacement, interior decorating, or room repair) and gradually work your way up to larger, more complex jobs. When you complete more jobs successfully, it leads to character upgrades. This allows for passive abilities to be improved, and you can earn bonuses like quicker installation times or more effective cleaning.

All of these progressive and gradual gameplay changes hook you in and leave you coming back for more.

Once you've played this to the end you're done.

House Flipper is available for purchase on Steam for $19.99. While this game has many positive aspects, replayability isn't one of them. Yes, you can replay missions and make different choices, but once you find your ideal route to the endgame, you're basically done!

The achievements are relatively standard, and there is no online play. Once the main game is completed, there's nothing really left to do. Replayability: 2

TL/DR

A house renovation and a flipping game whose wonky graphics can't detract from the game's granular detail and excellent progression system.
