A good game of mini golf is a special experience. The feeling of sinking a long putt or dealing with a hole's weird gimmicks is always great, as is the knowledge that you can do just a little bit better than the people with whom you are playing.

Golf It!

If you love mini-golf, you might want to give Golf It! a try. Though it's easy to compare with a few more well-known mini-golf games, it's best to judge this game on its own merits. Fortunately, many players will find that the game has a lot to offer.

If you love mini-golf, you might want to give Golf It! a try.

Serious and fun mini-golf

Mini-golf isn't exactly a high-concept sport. It's just golf reduced to putting, usually with some clever hole designs and maybe even some weird novelty tricks. This game embraces everything that makes mini-golf kitschy and fun, but it does so in a way that does take the game quite seriously.

Golf It!, doesn't bother with cute gimmicks or over-the-top imagery.

Unlike a lot of similar games, Golf It!, doesn't bother with cute gimmicks or over-the-top imagery - it's just a game that tries it's very best to translate the imagery and gameplay of mini-golf to the screen.

Beautiful cartoony graphics keep you engaged

Honestly, Golf It! is about as pretty as you're going to be able to make a mini-golf game. The art style is just cartoony enough to feel fun without totally taking away from the 'sport' aspects of the game, and every single course looks unique enough that you won't get tired of the visuals.

it's surprising that this much work has already gone into what the game looks like!

Given the Early Access nature of the game as well as the reasonably sedate subject matter, it's surprising that this much work has already gone into what the game looks like!

There's nothing too special about the audio, but it doesn't detract from the game. Each stage has fairly fitting sounds, but you can turn them off at your leisure. Simply put, the audio is unimportant enough that you can safely turn off your speakers and still have a good time with the game.

Good and bad gameplay

There's a lot of good and a lot of bad when it comes to this game. On the positive side of things, the course design is well done. The difficulty curve is a lot higher than one might think for a mini-golf game, but players will feel like they've accomplished something when they get a good score on a course.

There's also a lot to love about the course editor

There's also a lot to love about the course editor, which makes it easy to make challenging mini-golf courses even if you've only played the game a few times. On the negative side is the fact that the controls aren't great. It's far too difficult to judge the strength of your putt, so you'll miss some incredibly easy shots when you should've landed them.

There are plenty of little physics issues sprinkled throughout the courses as well, so many players are going to wind up far more frustrated than the game necessarily intends.

Building courses and fun play make it worth your time

Golf It! is still in Early Access, so players who pick it up now will definitely be gambling on the final product. It is a fun game in its current state, but some missteps in the control schemes and game physics do make it more frustrating than necessary.

Still, if you love mini-golf and want a chance to build your own courses, this game is one that's worth your time. Hopefully, a little more time in Early Access will allow this game to get the polish that it needs.

TL/DR

Golf It! is a fun but often frustrating mini-golf game that captures the best and worst aspects of this pastime.
