Fortnite is one of those games that came out of nowhere and took the world by storm.
It's not the most original game in the world, nor is it the game that requires the most skill, yet it's become the kind of social phenomenon that is rarely available in the world of gaming.
You can buy Fortnite clothing; you can play with Fortnite toys, even attend live tournaments, and with all the hype, it makes an awful lot of sense that most players would want to know if Fortnite is worth their time.
Fortnite is one of those games that came out of nowhere and took the world by storm
At this point, Fortnite is three different games in one. The original version of Fortnite, Save the World, is a defense game that pits teams of players against hordes of zombies, allowing them to build defensive structures during the day to hold off the monsters at night. The most famous version of Fortnite, though, is the battle royale mode that pits players against one another in an attempt to be the last person standing on an island. Fortnite also has a creative mode, which allows players to build entire games within the framework of Fortnite - a unique addition that lets the game be anything that a player decides.
Fortnite has a cartoony art style that allows it a lot more freedom than most would imagine. While the game itself is undoubtedly violent, it never really feels that way - everything's bright and colorful enough that it never seems to matter. Fortnite's graphics have long been hampered by the fact that the game was created so it could be played on virtually any reasonable machine. Still, recent updates have shown that Fortnite can do some impressive visual work when it's not held back.
The audio in Fortnite is good. You can hear everything you need, too, especially if you are in a firefight. The score isn't as good as the ambient noise, though it is still reasonably memorable. Recent updates and patches have added some new music and some new musical experiences to the game as well, so Fortnite's audio content will likely continue to improve as the game grows.
In all honesty, Fortnite's gameplay is all over the place. The gunplay is tight except when it isn't, the building works very well except when it's not quite as intuitive as you'd like, and the player characters control well unless they encounter something unusual. The sheer variety of experiences that you can have in the game do make the game stand out despite its imperfections, though - you always have to give Fortnite points for trying.
Where things fall apart, though, is with the fact that Fortnite is never sure what it wants to be, items are put into the game and taken out in attempts to balance the game, sometimes leaving big holes in the experience. A steadier version of Fortnite would probably be preferable to most players.
There is a reason why Fortnite is one of the most popular games on the planet. While it isn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, it is ambitious. There have been plenty of missteps over the life of the game, but the core experience remains more fun than it has any right to be. If you're looking for a quick game that takes time to master, this might be perfect for you.
Fortnite is a Battle Royale game that alternates between taking big risks and playing it too safe.
