Candy Crush is a typical "match-3" game where the user matches like candy colors to meet the various goals of the level. However, the game takes this basic format.

Candy Crush Saga

It gradually ratchets up the complexity until beating it without serious planning, thinking, and luck is impossible or, at least, without spending your hard-earned dollars on microtransactions.

Match 3 to continue

You have to connect three tiles of the same color to clear spaces. Each stage has a different objective. Complete the goal, and you move on. To spice things up, levels have different objectives (clear X amount of a specific color, get a score above XX,XXX, etc.). The longer you play, the harder the puzzles get, and additional challenges begin to clog up your screen.

The longer you play, the harder the puzzles get.

While puzzle games aren't usually known for their plot, Candy Crush makes an honest go of i. Your plane moves in an overworld from stage to stage, while cutesy, candy characters give you advice while also encouraging you to spend your money freely on bonuses (more on that later).

In theory, you are solving these puzzles so that the character Toffette can help other characters, but honestly, it's more tacked on than anything else. The puzzles are the main draw of the game.

Cute and colorful

The art style is cute and colorful, though some found it to be patronizing and child-like. However, for a puzzler, the colors are sharp and add to the overall satisfaction of completing levels. Since this is a mobile game, there's nothing immersive or particularly special about it, but from a visual perspective, the game uses its limited hardware well.

The soundtrack is lacking: It's the same song over and over again. By the time you replay a level for the 697th time, you have the song so stuck in your head that you won't be able to get rid of it for three days.

Increasing difficulty keeps you on your toes

The difficulty is a perfect slope with periodic spikes during each "world," which is comprised of fifteen stages. While levels can periodically get frustrating, there is very little more satisfying in any puzzle game than making that perfect move at the last second, causing a cascade of colors to rain down from the ceiling.

the longer you play, the more you have to think.

Candy Crush is perfect for casual gamers, but fans of puzzles can also derive a great deal of satisfaction from the game, and the longer you play, the more you have to think.

The biggest gripe about Candy Crush is its heavy reliance on micro-transaction. The game gives you five lives, and lives recharge every half an hour. However, short of using a bonus or paying for it, when you run out of lives, you're stuck and can't play until you recharge.

For a fee, you can purchase extra lives, bonus moves and more. The game isn't subtle about this: Frequent pop-ups and glowing menus are always making you aware of the microtransaction option. This detracts from the overall gameplay, particularly at hard levels, which can cause you to play for days before you get lucky enough to beat a level and move on.

Tons of fun but micro-transactions get annoying

The levels are creative, colorful and ramp up the difficulty so perfectly you don't even realize it. Levels can be replayed for higher scores, and a neat feature that allows you to hook your Facebook profile into the game encourages you to play again to beat your friends.

TL./DR

Candy's Crush's occasional issues cannot detract from its excellent gameplay and addictive puzzling.
