Call of Duty: Warzone is the free-to-play battle royale addition to the Call of Duty franchise. It was released this month for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC as a stand-alone game, however, it's actually part of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

In terms of battle royales, it allows slightly more than the standard 100 players in a game. Up to 150 players are dropped into the fictional city of Verdansk to fight to be the last one standing. However, this game actually has a respawn mechanic built into the battle royale. This is very unusual and definitely extends the lengths of games but at the same time, it does make the game more interesting.

COD Warzone

When a player dies in Warzone, they are sent to the Gulag where they can fight another defeated player in a 1-on-1 situation. The winner of this is then respawned back into the game meanwhile the loser is left behind. That's not the only respawn method though, Warzone also allows players to use the in-game currency system for this also. Players can purchase respawn tokens for themselves or other players who aren't revived through the Gulag method. You can find Buy Stations all over the map which can be used to revive another player.

Call of Duty: Warzone

The respawn system makes Call of Duty: Warzone feel totally unique while also being very fast. By the end of the game, there will be a lot fewer players than when it started but unlike other games, you aren't left running around trying to find the final player. There are usually quite a few people left resulting in a fast-paced game with lots of action, constant respawns and plenty of people fighting for first.

Another difference between this game and others is the lack of an inventory system. There are no backpacks and the inventory screen is very limited reducing the need to constantly look for loot before you can go off to fight. The aim is to urge players to fight as much as possible instead of being stuck looting for 20 minutes or hiding until the final few. To be fully ready for battle, all you need to do is find a gun you like and get some armor plates to help protect you from damage. Weapons come with specialized attachment setups that are pre-set for the weapon so there's no customization or need to fuss with it all.

Call of Duty Battle Royale

Warzone is definitely more 'simple' and players still have the health regeneration seen in the Call of Duty series. As a result, you can die pretty fast but also heal much faster than in other battle royale games. So this game is definitely much more forgiving than most games of this genre. The respawn system also suits that idea but it's a nice addition to have in a battle royale game. It can be frustrating when you die very quickly and need to wait for a new game but Call of Duty: Warzone reduces the frustration a bit thanks to the addition of the Gulag.

Killstreaks from the standard Call of Duty games are included which can be a little frustrating as players can buy them and dominate because of it. As the map shrinks, players will randomly fire airstrikes at the other side of the map to get lucky kills and this works too well most of the time. There are obviously a few issues in the game but it was also very recently released, updates will be coming in the future and hopefully, some of the issues will be addressed.

Warzone is a standard battle royale game in most ways. You parachute into the map, there are lots of other players and you're fighting to be the last one standing. Unlike other games though, it's focused on speed and action instead of looting and strategy. The aim of Call of Duty: Warzone is to keep you moving as much as possible and it definitely succeeded.
