One of the most frustrating parts of licensed LEGO games is that they don't feel much like playing with LEGO.

Sure, you get to run around and solve some puzzles, but there's never any real building and certainly never any sense that you can create.

Brick Rigs is all about building vehicles out of blocks and then seeing what you can do with them.

Brick Rigs is one of several games that seek to capture the more imaginative components of building block systems, this time in the form of vehicle creation. How well it stands up to the actual licensed games, though, depends on how kind the player feels like being to this Early Access title.

Building vehicles out of blocks - see what you can do with them!

Brick Rigs is all about building vehicles out of blocks and then seeing what you can do with them. It's the computer equivalent of getting a giant block of LEGO and figuring out what all the pieces can be put together to build, albeit without anything like an instruction manual to help you out.

Brick Rigs

This game is very much a throwback to the kind of unstructured play that was so much fun during childhood, with no storylines or really any rules to hold the player back. It might be simple, but everything here fits the core concept exceptionally well.

Blocky textures to give it that LEGO feel

Talking about the look of this game is odd because there are vast swaths of it that look somewhat terrible by design. This is a game about building not-quite LEGO, after all, so it makes sense that the various vehicles are going to have the blocky texture that is so closely associated with that building system.

The game does, however, do a very good job of making all the backgrounds and the lighting look nice. The audio wavers between fine and non-existent, so it doesn't have much of an impact on the game. It's one of those things that probably needs a little more work before the game exits Early Access, but it's not something that will bother the average player.

Everything in this game is in service of the core concept, so it alls works together quite well to make you feel like you're in a giant LEGO playground.

Nothing is complicated about this gameplay

To say that the gameplay in Brick Rigs is simple would probably be an understatement. You can do two things here - build vehicles or drive them around.

You might consider a third option the destruction of said vehicles, but that often feels like a natural outgrowth of building.

This Early Access title doesn't have anything like a story or goals quite yet. Therefore the gameplay mostly exists in a vacuum.

Fortunately, everything in the game itself works reasonably well. The downside to the game is, as with most other Early Access titles, the bugs, and Brick Rigs is a very buggy game in multiplayer, so don't expect things to work out quite as you'd like. When things are working well, though, the game does a remarkably solid job of letting you play around in a very big sandbox.

Pretty good replay for an Early Access

Brick Rigs is a remarkably well-conceived game that feels very much like it has a long time left to go before it's ready to be released. It has already been in Early Access for a while, though, and major improvements never really seem to stick. If your goal is to play with building blocks and make your dream vehicle, you might have fun here for a bit.

Otherwise, you'll want to watch the game and see what it eventually becomes.

TL/DR

Brick Rigs is an Early Access building title with a good concept, but it needs a lot more polish.
