Baldur's Gate 3

The best of the old with the best of the new.

A Promising Successor to the Baldur's Gate Series

Delivering a sequel to Baldur's Gate couldn't have been easy. Decades later, it's still recognized as one of the highest watermarks in roleplaying games. In many ways, it shaped the modern CRPG, and its influence can be seen directly in the RPGs of today. True success means somehow managing to appeal to hardcore fans of the original while accommodating the quality of life factors and general evolutions that modern gamers have come to expect.

[Baldur's Gate 3] welcomes a freeform game with destructible environments and sandbox experimentation that takes on Dungeons & Dragon's turn-based combat.

Fortunately, the current early access release of Baldur's Gate 3 has fulfilled its promise. Baldur's Gate developer, Larian Studios, already proved that they have something new to bring to the conversation with their Divinity: Original Sin series. Their newest addition to the Baldur's Gate series welcomes a freeform game with destructible environments and sandbox experimentation that takes on Dungeons & Dragon's turn-based combat.

A Fantasy World Where Imagination Has No Limits

Tabletop Dungeons and Dragons players have long bemoaned the fact that computer gaming can't quite replicate that feeling of sitting around a table with friends and coming up with creative solutions to bizarre problems. But perhaps no game has come closer than Baldur's Gate 3. Despite still being in early access and only providing players with the first act of the story, you're thrown into the deep end right from the start.

Or perhaps more accurately, you're thrown down to earth. As a prisoner of the Illithid (a big creepy creature with horrific squid features), you've been infected with a parasite. While the game starts with the airship on which you're imprisoned, your crash landing doesn't grant you freedom. The parasite in your brain will turn you into an Illithid without treatment, and that means making tenuous alliances with other former captives and performing tasks for a variety of different colorful personalities. There's so much to do that it can be overwhelming. While the available first act will probably eat up 15 to 20 hours of your time, there's plenty of opportunities to keep replaying, thanks to the marvelous range of flexibility Larian has built into the game.

Breathing Life Into Faerun

The world of Faerun that the Baldur's Gate series takes place on may look like a traditional fantasy world, but it's never looked better than it does here. There's a sense of wonder and majesty to the environments, and the fact that the first act doesn't even have the player setting foot in Baldur's Gate proper means there's some good variety to the environments you can explore. The voice acting and sound effects aren't the most exceptional around, but it's still early access, and they certainly get the job done.

Rounding everything out is an incredibly robust character builder. You can choose from six of the core D&D classes and nine different races. Combine that with a huge amount of customization options, and you're presented with the opportunity to bring your D&D character to life more realistically than ever before.

Rewardingly Deep and Broad Gameplay

But you'll have more opportunities to shape the personality of your character through the course of the story. The Divinity series has turned roleplaying game design on its head with its environmental puzzle design, and Baldur's Gate 3 elevates that to the next level. Practically any item you find can be used as an impromptu weapon, and you can manipulate and destroy the environment to devastating effects.

The scale of creativity may scare off some players at first, but it's immensely rewarding once you get a sense of how flexible it is. There are no rote solutions to any one problem, but there are plenty of opportunities. Built off the latest fifth edition rules to Dungeons and Dragons, it does a great job of replicating the push and pull that happens between a Dungeon Master and a player in a real D&D game.

A Game That Rewards Creativity

Based on the pedigree of Larian and the early impressions of Baldur's Gate 3, it's easy to get excited about what the game will have to offer. If you're a Dungeons and Dragons fan or a player who pines for the days of early Bioware RPGs, you'll find a whole lot to love about Baldur's Gate 3. With the full release still a ways off, there's still a lot more content to come.

TL/DR

Baldur's Gate 3 takes a beloved role-playing series and updates it for the modern age with both quality of life features and an expanded focus on player agency.
