Learn the basics in this edutainment survival horror game.
Will you survive Baldi's teachings?
Baldi's Basics Plus builds on the same concept as Five Nights at Freddy's. Take something innocuous like a children's educational video game from the '90s, and hide horror elements. The game may not be pretty, but it's just as unsettling as a fever dream.
In a world modeled like the cheap maze of a Windows 98 screen saver, Baldi's Basics Plus hides real horror. The game features procedurally generated levels, so no two game-play through feels the same.
Players must find several hidden notebooks throughout the level, while not getting caught by Baldi. Baldi can hear many of the actions the player takes, using those cues to find the player. The result is a hectic scramble to hide from a monster that can hear the smallest sounds – even your frantic breathing.
Let's not mince words here – Baldi's Basics Plus is ugly intentionally. The game absolutely mimics the terrible look of early '90s education games, while hiding its survival horror theme. You're not playing this game for the graphics, though the audio experience is integral to gameplay.
Collecting notebooks is the primary goal of Baldi's Basics Plus, but contending with Baldi is the challenge. This cheap imitation of a '90s game can hear like a hawk. Random events can happen that make escaping Baldi a real challenge.
The school floors may flood, or players may find the school drenched in a thick fog. The addition of these challenges makes escaping Baldi extra challenging since his hearing never dissipates. The main mode of the game features a series of randomly generated levels.
Endless mode offers players the chance to see how many notebooks they can collect before being caught. A Challenge mode offers unique scenarios that aren't available in the main game. They include sneaking around at night, or both characters are running at high speeds.
Right now, Baldi's Basics Plus is an early access game, and it shows. The procedurally generated levels provide unlimited challenges, but pre-made levels are lacking. One of the best parts of the original game is the sheer amount of new levels to play.
Baldi's Basics Plus melds the expectation of playing a crappy edutainment game with real survival horror. It's hard – Baldi will catch you many, many times. But as players learn new hiding places and which floor types make extra noise, the challenges become heart-pounding.
Sneaking past Baldi to snag the last notebook is a fantastic experience. The only real downside to the game is that it is intentionally obtuse, to mimic how '90s games functioned.
Do you love hide-and-seek survival horror games? Baldi's Basics Plus features hidden horrors in a crappy '90s game.
Hide-and-seek horrors await in this perfect re-creation of what '90s edutainment games felt like to play.
