Animal Crossing, Now Mobile Friendly

Animal Crossing is the now-legendary series meant for video game players who are looking for the escapism of video games without the stress of dying at the hands of a hideous digital monster.

In this entry, Animal Crossing joins the slew of games that have migrated to the mobile platform. As a nod to the smaller screen, instead of building a city and integrating it into a village, players have to create a campsite.

From there, the usual facets of Animal Crossing kick in.

Small screen, big personality

Despite the transition to a pocket-sized device, Pocket Camp still manages to maintain much of the game's original charm. You start by creating your avatar. From there, you befriend other players, collect supplies to build furniture, and complete in-game tasks to earn currency. There are also social aspects: You can visit other people's campfires, and they can visit yours.

Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp is a tried and true formula and one that feels as comfortable as an old baseball glove.

Unfortunately, there's little variation. Other Animal Crossing Games tend to push the envelope a little more, or at least attempt to fold in new features. Pocket Camp comes up short in his regards.

Awww.....

Animal Crossing is a game series known for being cute and cuddly, not its immersive 3-D graphics or sharp sense of realism. In this regard, the game continues its tradition of success.

The sound effects and soundtrack are still peaceful, calming, and adorable. Your avatar and the various NPCs are still so-so-cute.

No one is downloading Pocket Camp for its killer graphics, but there is no question that the look and feel of the game enhance the overall experience.

Same play, smaller screen, slightly larger problems

As noted above, many of the in-game activities will feel the same. You can hunt for bugs, collect materials, and build relationships with in-game characters.

Since it's mobile, activities are pared down: You have to go to specific locations to do certain games. This makes the mobile game easier to manage.

As a result of the mobile format of the game, there are some issues. Load times do stutter at moments. In an era of instant gratification, this grows very frustrating, very quickly.

Moving can also be a challenge and can interfere with the quick-play nature of mobile games. Indeed, to an extent, the game clearly wasn't optimized for mobile.

Mobile games are designed with convenience and ease in mind, and the design of Pocket Camp misses the mark.

Conclusion

Pocket Camp is available for download on most major mobile devices, including Google Play and the Apple Store. The game is a free download, but you can pay for in-app purchases.

You can purchase Leaf Tickets using real money, and use those Leaf Tickets to purchase items in the game.

Fundamentally, this is a game that leaves you with plenty to do, and that's the nature of replayability. Between the game's various activities, social aspects, and upgrades, you will not get bored for hours here.

This is also a real benefit of the game being mobile: You can take out your phone, complete a task or two, grab that upgrade, and get right back to work.

TL/DR

An earnest attempt to replicate the Animal Crossing on your mobile device, this game gets stale at times but will offer fans of the franchise a good time.
