Major Games Revealed in the Xbox Games Showcase Event

First-Party Games, Game Updates, and More

On July 23rd, Microsoft went live across the internet for their Summer Game Fest event. Ahead of the fall release of their next-generation console, the Xbox Series X, Microsoft's Xbox Games Showcase set the stage for the genesis of their next-generation gaming machine while also showcasing some impressive and exciting new games that continue the life of their current Xbox One.

In some more exciting news: a lot of the games will utilize the new Smart Delivery platform which means if you buy a game on Xbox One, you'll be able to upgrade to the new Xbox Series X version for free and even your saved game information will transfer, allowing you to pick up right where you left off!


Halo Infinite

  • Release: Holiday 2020
  • Availability: Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC

What better way to begin their presentation than the console-exclusive continuation of the story of Master Chief, a character that debuted in the original Halo game launched with the original Xbox console in November 2001.

In this new chapter, the player will be able to explore one of the huge rings visible in all Halo games for the first time. Gameplay footage seem to hint Infinite will explore an open world than in the previous entries. Weapons shown during the footage ranged from the classic Pulse Rifle and also included a look at new offerings like a grappling hook. Halo: Infinite will be optimized for Xbox Series X.


Fable

  • Release: TBC, expected late 2021 or after.

Among other highly-anticipated previews was a trailer for the fourth installation in the Role-playing Game franchise Fable. Rumored to be a soft reboot of the franchise, the trailer itself was a bit vague but did include impressive visuals of the fantasy forest world the franchise is known for. Fable will be optimized for the Xbox Series X.


Dragon Quest XI S

  • Release: December 4th, 2020
  • Availability: Xbox One - PC

A popular JRPG already released on Nintendo Switch is being ported to the Xbox One. After some updates including an orchestral overhaul to the soundtrack, a fun two-dimensional "pixel art" mode, new side quests, and a photo mode were added to the game it began picking up traction after initial criticism.


State of Decay 3

  • Release: TBC

A third installment for the Zombie survival franchise, players continue dealing with human opponents and infected while the wilderness brings new challenges with infected wildlife as well.


Everwild

  • Release: TBC
  • Availability: Xbox Series X, PC

A new IP from Rare studios, the Everwild trailer provided a look into a wonderful forest world full of magical animals that make up this open-world RPG. Gamers will play as the character known as Eternal, who is able to not only see magic but also how it affects everything that it runs through. Everwild will be enhanced for the Xbox Series X.


Forza Motorsport

If racing is your thing, you're in luck! The teaser for Forza Motorsport looks spectacular and has been developed by a team whose passion is equal for cars and the sport of racing. Developed in 4k and full 60fps, the newest Forza and its dynamic environment will blow you away!


Avowed

  • Release: TBC
  • Availability: Xbox Series X, PC

Obsidian studios gave us an early teaser for their next First-person RPG. Based on the shown footage, word has spread referring to the game as Obsidian's "Skyrim," another popular Role-playing game released nearly a decade ago. The teaser was chock full of Medieval imagery, magic, and beasts. Avowed will be optimized for release on the Xbox series X.


Tell Me Why

  • Release: August 27, 2020
  • Availability: Xbox One, PC

From the developers of the Life is Strange series comes a new choices-driven game. Playing a set of twins and set in Alaska, players will help the twins bonded through supernatural forces work their way through childhood memories. Although the game will take place over three separate episodes, the developer has decided to release all three episodes at once.


Ori and the Will of the Wisps

  • Release: Currently available on Xbox One
  • Availability: Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC

This emotional platformer sequel and the original received rave reviews when they were released. Adding to the excellent gameplay and harrowing story, both games boast incredible visuals through their animation style. Microsoft took the opportunity to announce that this sequel will be optimized for the Xbox Series X, featuring beautiful 4K HDR and refresh rates up to 120Hz.


S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2

  • Release: TBC
  • Availability: Xbox Series X, PC

This open-world FPS allows players to make choices that will determine the direction of their game. Waiting for over a decade, Stalker 2 will expand its fan base beyond PC when it will be released on Xbox Series X as a timed exclusive along with PC release before it hits other platforms.


Tetris Effect Connected

  • Release: Fall 2020
  • Availability: Xbox One, PC, Xbox Series X

Touted as a bit of a remix or 2.0 version of the 2018 game, this "add-on" will add both a competitive and cooperative multiplayer experience with a whole new dimension to the gameplay of this classic game.


Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis

  • Release: 2021
  • Availability: Xbox One - PC - Xbox Series X

Although this Free-to-play fantasy-style action MMORPG was released as Phantasy Star Online 2 earlier this year to PC, it was announced that the New Genesis version would be hitting consoles and promising both engine and graphics updates. The wording has been a bit confusing as to whether this will be considered a new stand-alone game within the universe or an add-on to the existing game.


The Medium Dual Reality

  • Release: Late 2020
  • Availability: PC, Xbox Series X

A horror, psychological thriller game with a highly original concept. Gameplay will actually take place across two different realities or experiences that will be displayed at the same time. The main character is a medium who can see "both sides of the story" and interact on both sides whether individually or simultaneously. The Medium also touts "no visible load times."


The Outer Worlds Peril on Gorgon

  • Release: September 9, 2020
  • Availability: Xbox One, PC, Xbox Series X

Obsidian has been a busy studio, announcing a DLC pack for their popular RPG The Outer Worlds, which was released last year. The DLC pack will add a new campaign and weapons.


Crossfire X

  • Release: Late 2020
  • Availability: Xbox One, Xbox Series X

Choose between two factions in this action military shooter. Players will also be immersed in various innovative multiplayer modes that will be inclusive to all skill levels.


The Gunk

  • Release: 2021
  • Availability: Xbox One, PC, Xbox Series X

Explore vibrant space-worlds and solve puzzles, all while trying to suck up and figure out what the heck that black goo is that seems to be corrupting the world and wildlife around you. The Gunk is an action RPG by the developers of Steamworld.


Grounded

  • Release: July 28, 2020
  • Availability: Xbox One - PC - Xbox Series X

A survival RPG game meets "Honey, I Shrunk the kids." Live as a person smaller than insects as you scavenge regular-sized objects to build while you protect yourself from all manner of wildlife that you could usually squash with your shoe.


As Dusk Falls

  • Release: TBC
  • Availability: Xbox Series X, PC

A story told as the paths of two families meet, described as a highly interactive play style with little else said about gameplay or story but more details to come soon!


Psychonauts 2

  • Release: 2021
  • Availability: Xbox One, PC, Xbox Series X

Players control a character named Raz in this third-person platformer game, which includes an original track by Tenacious D's Jack Black!


Warhammer 40,000 - Darktide

  • Release: 2021
  • Availability: Xbox Series X, PC

An action-packed first-person melee combat game set in the Warhammer universe. This game is meant for co-op between 4 people. The developers have stuck to what they're good at while trying to add a new dynamic to the ranged attacks on this go as well.


Destiny 2: Beyond Light

  • Release: 2020
  • Availability: Xbox One, PC, Xbox Series X

The hybrid FPS and MMORPG will be coming to Gamepass Ultimate and will include all of the expansion packs and add-ons! The newest expansion, Beyond Light, will add two new classes and new zones.
