All across the world, League of Legends has been hailed as one of the most prestigious and long-running Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA). It's no surprise then, that when Riot Games announced the mobile version, League of Legends: Wild Rift, in October 2019, that League players far and wide went wild.

Since then, though? The game has remained shrouded in mystery. Now, thanks to some newly dropped footage and details by the team at Riot Games, we've got our first taste of what to expect from the upcoming mobile game, League of Legends: Wild Rift. Let's take a look at some of the highlights from the gameplay and commentary from the design team.

Developer Diary

League of Legends is already a well-established gaming community. It's crucial, then, to hear from team members involved in the process of bringing this experience to the mobile platform. The Dev Diary offers some insight from people like Michael Chow, an executive producer at Riot Games, as well as lead developer Jonathan Chao and product manager David Xu.

A common theme among the team is the desire to keep Wild Rift as accurate to the original League of Legends as possible. However, David Xu points out that some changes are coming too! The matches are going to be more fast-paced than Wild Rift's PC-based counterpart, averaging 15-20 minutes rather than LoL's average of about 35 minutes per game.

He goes on to confirm that Wild Rift will launch with a somewhat limited 36 Champions. There are plans to release many more as the game grows, Xu says. Expect these Champions to have their unique abilities when compared to their PC versions, a nice twist for any players looking to shake things up.

Jonathan Chao, meanwhile, confirmed that while some things change, Runes remain ever-present. To fit the faster matches, though, they'll be streamlined. The addition of minor Runes will keep the Champions balanced in this new play style as well. Also expect to see some Wild Rift exclusive Runes in the mobile game!

Gameplay Reveal

The gameplay portion of the reveal focused on matches themselves, and what to expect while playing League of Legends: Wild Rift. It's a faithful recreation of the beloved MOBA while bringing some speed-boosting changes.

You'll still push deep into enemy territory and destroy their Reimagined Nexus to claim victory. But things like this Reimagined Nexus remove the need for turrets, streamlining both the defending and assaulting processes.

Additionally, gameplay footage revealed a co-op versus AI system, where players will be able to team up together and practice the best methods. The tutorial modes also offer tips and tricks on how to become a better team player, as well as use the abilities of the 36 launch Champions.

Upcoming Alpha and Beyond

It sounds like League of Legends: Wild Rift will have a little bit of something for everyone. New players will find the tutorial zones useful, while seasoned LoL players can rest assured that the core of matches remains the same. Runes are still vital tools during a game but simplified for a fresh take on the classic play style.

The development team announced an upcoming alpha for Brazil and the Philippines. They officially start on June 6 and will last for two weeks. During this time, players are encouraged to stress test everything from the 5v5 team matches to the co-op versus AI and. Newcomers should even take on the training.

Riot Games hopes to release League of Legends: Wild Rift worldwide by the end of 2020. Keep your eyes peeled for the award-winning global MOBA coming to your mobile device!
